Pu-erh (プーアル, Pūaru), known mostly as Puar in the English dubs, is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball metaseries by Akira Toriyama. In the Harmony Gold USA dub from the 1980s, the character is known as Squeeker (not Sparkles, as is commonly quoted),[1] and was played by Cheryl Chase.

Though bearing an appearance to that of a mouse or cat, Pu-erh is neither species, but is drawn a little bit to look like a cat.[2] The name is a pun on Pu-erh tea.[3]

Background history

Template:Spoilers Often soft-spoken at times, Pu-erh serves as Yamcha's constant companion. The two were originally a pair of desert thieves, robbing travelers whom would cross the area where they lived. On one such occasion, they finally meet Son Goku, Bulma, and Pu-erh recognized an old schoolmate, Oolong, who was with the two.[4] After the duo encountered Goku, Bulma, and Oolong in the desert, the five eventually teamed up and went on a hunt for the Dragon Balls, and would sometimes aid each other on later adventures. Pu-erh makes two cameo appearances in Dragon Ball GT; episodes 40, "Piccolo's Decision", and 64, "Until We Meet Again...". By the end of Dragon Ball GT, Yamcha returns to his vagabond life in the desert with Pu-erh.

Alternate timeline

Pu-erh is one of the few characters to survive in the "Trunks Timeline," as seen in the television special, Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks. He is hidden in a submarine with Oolong, Muten Roshi and Umigame.

Gender

There is some debate regarding Pu-erh's gender. Despite being voiced by only female voice actors, the character was referred to as female numourous times in the anime, although Toriyama has indicated in interviews that he had considered him male while writing the manga. In the Japanese versions, Pu-erh refers to himself as boku and is sometimes referred to as Pu-erh-kun, hinting male characteristics.

Powers and abilities

Pu-erh has the innate ability of flight, as seen throughout the series. Having also learned how to master shapeshifting by graduating from the Shapeshifting Academy, he can transform into anything, even inanimate objects. Unlike Oolong, Pu-erh can hold a form for as long as he likes; although his strength is not increased by the transformation, and can’t turn into something that can be used up, like fuel or food.
